First pot in the new clay

Emma walking her piece to the bisque

I started working in the new clay that I mixed last week. It's a highfire body that I have used in the past and I added sawdust and perlite to. I am hoping to get some work done for the wood fire in November. Using this new clay felt like learning to ride a bike again. It’s grainy and full of inconsistencies which is proving to be challenging and kinda fun at the same time. I am hoping the results of this clay will further back that idea that I am working on. That we can't really control what happens to us and life leaves its different scars on everyone. With all that being said I got three pots made with this new clay and I am not too happy with the shape of the last one.

All while I am talking about silly pots, a devastating hurricane has hit the US this past week. My immediate reaction is that I am grateful that my family was not displaced and that everyone is ok. I know so many others cannot say the same. So in times like this I often question what the importance of making art is or to be an artist, but it’s art that has made life so precious to me. It’s art that makes life beautiful and all the hard stuff worth living through. It has been art that has brought so many communities together to support one another. So I think it is most important to be grateful for it and to continue to hold onto it.
