Blog #12, Fall 2024

This week I finished up the first bigger cone 10 piece I was working on. It is a similar shape to the largest piece I have done. I think I will stick with that shape for now. I finished the piece with some smatterings of different cone 10 wood clays. I am really excited for the direction this work is going in and am looking forward to getting this fired. I also started a base for this pot made out of porcelain slipped paper towels. It is the same idea as the test block I made in week 9. I am making this one much bigger and keeping the middle hollowed out to reduce weight. I already have so many ideas for the ‘pedestals’ in the future. I think the contrasting plain white of the porcelain is a good place to start, but I am excited to see where else I can take it. The idea that the strips of slipped paper are so thin and fragile by themselves but once put and layered together is an interesting concept to me that I want to further explore. Sarah and Molly had their Space lab reception on Wednesday, and I thought it was incredibly successful. I really enjoy being surrounded by other people’s work and ideas. I also spent the rest of this week taking pictures of more work that I didn’t have photographed yet. This coming week I am hoping to start another bigger piece and to finish up that first porcelain stand.
