Blog #7, Spring 2025
Monday was again my big studio work day. I came in on Monday and got to see the pieces come out of Jooby’s soda kiln and was really pleased. The results were really interesting and encouraging, it definitely made me excited for the next firing of these larger pieces. I cleaned those pots that came out of the soda and then threw some bowls for the Empty Bowls charity event as well as some mug bodies to put in the next soda. These mugs were mostly to fill some of this space in the soda but I am also potentially thinking of using some of them for the scarring I’m working on. During Tuesday’s class, we have a line blend demo which has got me thinking about all different types of glazes to test this semester and potentially using different variants of the same glaze to get interesting effects hopefully. Also spent Tuesday, watching Jooby raku some of their work and spent time trimming the bowls I threw Monday. Tuesday, on my way to studio work, I destroyed my ankle so I did not get in Wednesday but rested instead. Thursday during class I added pinched handles to the mug bodies I threw earlier in the week and I love the look of these so much more and I am excited to make more soon. Friday, I had a chef job so again I did not get into the studio. I came on Sunday though and spent some time researching different wood ash glazes I could try for the line test. After deciding, I mixed the base glaze then decided to increase by increments of 3% wood ash each time. I am super excited to see the results of this test because it could definitely be something I could use in the future if it goes well. I finished up the week completing my hour of stewardship.
